Dr Benjamin Gorman

Benjamin is a Deputy Head of the Department of Computing & Informatics at 欧美性爱片, where he also serves as Programme Leader for MSc Digital Health and MSc Internet of Things and co-leads the 欧美性爱片 Computer Human Interaction (BUCHI) research group.

He earned his PhD in 2018 from the University of Dundee, where he also completed a BSc in Applied Computing. His research specialises in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Accessibility, with a particular focus on developing assistive technologies for individuals with hearing impairments. His doctoral research explored methods to improve speechreading techniques, aiding communication for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Benjamin is actively engaged in the HCI academic community, having served as an Associate Chair for several CHI conferences () and receiving recognition for his exceptional reviews in SIGCHI venues.

Research

Benjamin's research areas broadly encompass Human-Computer Interaction, Accessibility & Assistive Technologies, and User Experience. Within this scope, Benjamin is particularly interested in:

- Using metadata within video and audio to enhance media viewing experiences, with a focus on flexible media that leverages data - such as within subtitles - to improve access and create new, inclusive experiences for diverse user needs and contexts.
- Increasing the accessibility of content for people with disabilities
- Examining how human involvement can increase the applicability of Generative AI and other AI tools, especially in education and accessibility contexts.
- Developing interactive visualisations and physical data representations that foster engagement and reflection,
- Exploring the accessibility of financial technology (FinTech) and advancing inclusive design practices within the sector
- Investigating methods to improve digital inclusivity through knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs) and collaborations with local communities and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).
